Recently in my part of the world, due to the long draught we have been experiencing a lot of fire related disasters. My social media feeds have been flooded with images of burning forest and houses. It’s pretty devastating to see.
Since last week I saw a lot of people began their own donation drives to help with the fire victims and just like many times before this, I noticed that there is a very disturbing trend in all these donations drives; that is an overflowing donation of used clothes. Most of the time, more than what is needed by the fire victims.
I know donating stuff to charity drives is very noble and the people who contributed what they can are good people who care about others. But something need to be said about the lack of mindfulness when we are giving things away because sadly, this is the reason why most of these donations will eventually end up in the landfills; wasted.
There should be a proper way or organizing donation drives and organizers need to learn how to ‘refuse’ stuff that is not needed and ask for stuff that is needed. We need to know that donation drives are not a Konmari Party where you get the excuse to get rid of useless junk in your home in the name of giving to the needy. That is not the correct mindset to have if you are supporting a donation drive. Please bear in mind that donation needs to specifically addressed victims needs or they will be useless.
Let me share with you photos of overflowing donations of used clothes in one of the most recent donation drives.

Do you see what I mean? All these clothes will eventually go to waste. This collection centre will close at one point and no charity organisation even have a warehouse large enough to house all these used clothes. So eventually they will be sent to the landfill.
Learn to Donate what is overlooked
When organizing a charity drive or when thinking of donating to a charity drive to help fire victims, we need to be able to think outside the box a little. Chances are we are not first responders. So that means most of the usual and basic stuff are already available (clothes, water, rice, snacks). What the centre need might be something that everyone else overlook. Put yourself in the shoes of the victims… what will you need other than clothes, water and food?
How to REALLY be Helpful.
In the spirit of helping you to organize a more effective donation drives. I have created a short infographic to help you decide what to donate and look for when you want to help fire victims. Share them if you think they are useful
Hope that is helpful and let is strive to do better Donation Drives in the future.

I do enjoy the way you have framed this specific concern plus it does give me some fodder for thought. However, because of just what I have personally seen, I just wish as the reviews pile on that folks keep on issue and in no way start on a soap box associated with some other news du jour. Yet, thank you for this excellent point and though I can not really go along with it in totality, I regard your point of view.

Yes, unfortunately this happens not only on fire donation drive but in almost all donation drives. It would be great if we have organisers who would actively educate the public about the proper etiquette of donating stuff to the needy.
